How Much Does a Website Cost in the UK? (Honest 2025 Guide)

Website prices range from £0 to £50,000. This honest guide explains what you actually get at each price point, what affects cost, and how to avoid overpaying.

One of the most common questions we hear from business owners is: how much should a website cost? The honest answer is: it depends. But that is not very helpful, so let us break down exactly what you get at each price point in the UK market right now.

DIY website builders: £0 to £30/month

Platforms like Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy Website Builder let you build a website yourself using templates. Monthly plans typically cost between £10 and £30.

What you get: a functional website quickly, with no upfront cost. Suitable for hobby projects, very early stage startups testing an idea, or businesses with minimal online presence needs.

What you miss: professional design, SEO performance, page speed optimisation, custom functionality, and a site that is genuinely unique to your brand. These platforms also typically have limitations that become frustrating as your business grows.

Most business owners who built their own Wix or Squarespace site end up paying a professional to rebuild it within 12 to 18 months. The time invested in the DIY approach often exceeds the cost of hiring a professional from the start.

Budget freelancers: £200 to £800

The lower end of the professional market is populated by freelancers and offshore agencies offering full websites at very low prices. You will find plenty of these on platforms like Fiverr and PeoplePerHour.

What you get: a live website, usually built on a WordPress template, in a reasonably short timeframe.

What you miss: at this price point, there is simply not enough time to do the work properly. Strategy, custom design, performance optimisation, and SEO foundations are usually absent or superficial. Many of these sites also require ongoing maintenance costs that add up over time.

Boutique agencies and senior freelancers: £500 to £3,000

This is where the market gets interesting. Boutique agencies and experienced freelancers operating in this price range can offer genuine quality: strategic thinking, custom design, proper development, and SEO foundations built in from day one.

At Houghton Web Design, our websites start from £350 for trade websites and go up to £2,000 for complex builds with AI features or automation. At this price, you should expect:

  • A discovery session to understand your goals and target customer
  • Custom design that reflects your brand, not a template
  • Mobile-first development that performs well on all devices
  • SEO foundations: proper headings, meta tags, schema markup
  • Fast loading times that pass Google's Core Web Vitals
  • A site that is built to generate enquiries, not just look good
  • Post-launch support and guidance

Established agencies: £5,000 to £20,000+

Larger, established agencies charge significantly more. Their pricing reflects their overheads: office space, account managers, project managers, senior designers, and developers.

For most SMEs, this level of spend is hard to justify. You are partly paying for the agency's brand and infrastructure. That said, for large projects with complex requirements, enterprise integrations, or significant ecommerce functionality, an established agency may be the right choice.

What affects the cost of a website?

  • Number of pages: more pages take more time to design and build
  • Custom functionality: booking systems, portals, integrations, and dynamic features all add cost
  • Ecommerce: online stores require significant additional work
  • Content: if you need copywriting, photography, or video, this adds to the budget
  • Complexity of design: highly bespoke, custom animations add time
  • Ongoing requirements: monthly retainers for maintenance and support

What to look for in a quote

A trustworthy web design quote should be itemised. You should be able to see what you are paying for. Be wary of vague quotes that say "website design and development" with a single price.

Also ask about ongoing costs. Hosting, domain renewal, maintenance, and support can add up. Make sure you understand what happens after launch.

The cheapest website is almost never the best value. A website that generates five enquiries a month is worth far more than a website that costs a fraction of the price but generates none.
